New exhibit highlights Buffalo Bill’s time in New Orleans

Denver, CO - “Outfit at the bottom of the river, what shall I do?”  A sunken riverboat was just the first disaster that confronted Buffalo Bill during the Wild West’s 1884-85 season in New Orleans.  Yet the Wild West’s disastrous visit to New Orleans would eventually yield far reaching benefits for both Buffalo Bill and the people of that city.  This timely story is told in the Buffalo Bill Museum’s new exhibit “Out of Disaster... Hope:  Buffalo Bill in New Orleans”.  The exhibit will open at the Buffalo Bill Museum located at 987 1/2 Lookout Mountain Road at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, February 26, 2006 as part of the Museum’s annual Buffalo Bill Birthday celebration; and will remain open during normal museum business hours until January 28, 2007.  Free children’s activities, musical performances and photo opportunities with Wild West characters will take place from noon until 3:00 p.m.  Everyone who visits the new exhibit during the event will receive a Madri Gras necklace.

The exhibit will cover Buffalo Bill’s influence on Mardi Gras as well as feature artifacts on loan from several museums in New Orleans.   Buffalo Bill was in New Orleans for over 3 months during the winter of 1884-85, and faced many hardships.  The sinking of the riverboat was just the beginning, nearly constant rain kept people away from the Wild West show and it closed with $60,000 in debt.  But the season had a hopeful aftermath.  Buffalo Bill met Annie Oakley, who became the most popular performer in the Wild West.   The Wild West’s presence during Mardi Gras of 1885 inspired the African Americans of New Orleans to create their own alternative Mardi Gras celebrations, which have continued to today.

The exhibit “Out of Disaster...Hope: Buffalo Bill in New Orleans” features artifacts from Buffalo Bill’s Wild West and from New Orleans.  Sitting Bull’s headdress and other Indian artifacts are compared to Mardi Gras Indian outfits and posters from the Wild West contrast with posters from Mardi Gras.  Artifacts, sound, videos and photographs tell the story of a critical season in

the life of both a show and a city.

Planning this exhibit about Buffalo Bill in New Orleans began in 2004 and was interrupted by the Katrina disaster.  After Katrina the exhibit was nearly cancelled, then revived with the new emphasis on disaster and hope.  The last section of the exhibit will include post-Katrina photos of the New Orleans Buffalo Bill knew and an interactive area where visitors can record their own thoughts about the past and future of one of America’s most historical cities.

  • Town Hall Meeting for the Strategic Transportation Plan (STP).
    Blank

    MARK YOUR CALENDAR!

Next month, the City and County of Denver will be hosting the third public Town Hall Meeting for the Strategic Transportation Plan (STP). Please join us on:

    Tuesday, February 21st

Webb Municipal Building (201 West Colfax Avenue)

    4th Floor Conference Room, 4F6/4G2

    5:30 pm to 7:00 pm

We will start with a short presentation on the Pilot Travel Shed Process and a summary of the recent Focus Group Meetings. Following the presentation, participants will be encouraged to provide input on transportation issues in the next areas to be studied.

The Town Hall Meeting will be held in an open house format with work stations set up for the next areas of specific study (Travel Sheds). These include travel in the areas around:

      • Hampden
      • Speer
      • Leetsdale
      • East Colfax
      • Brighton Blvd.
      • DIA

The purpose of the work stations is to allow the community an opportunity to identify current transportation issues and concerns in each of these areas. You will have an opportunity to provide input on transportation needs that should be considered in the citywide STP planning process.

The STP is being developed by Denver Public Works with major support from Denver Community Planning and Development and will be a primary implementation tool of Blueprint Denver and the Denver Comprehensive Plan. The STP will determine the types of transportation investments Denver needs to plan for bikes, pedestrians, and transit, as well as for street improvements for vehicle traffic. The STP is the first step in identifying the needs for every major travel corridor in the City. The STP approach embodies a collaborative planning process that involves city agencies, regional authorities, and the public in key decisions throughout plan development.

Please call Mark Najarian at (720) 865 3172 or Amy Wiedeman at (720) 865 3136 if you have any questions. You may also go to the project website at www.keepdenvermoving.com for additional information about the project.
